NBCA Receives $800,000 in Funding for Local Leukemia Research in the Elderly

Santa Rosa, CA (April 1, 2011) North Bay Cancer Alliance (NBCA) is pleased to announce it has received a bequest of slightly more than $800,000 to fund the support of research in Leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes in the elderly in the North Bay communities. The bequest was made from the estate of Virginia M. Hoffman.

Marek Bozdech, M.D., of the Redwood Regional Oncology Center, has been appointed by the trust to determine the organization to receive the funds (NBCA) and then to design a research protocol. The preliminary clinical trial is titled: A Phase II Study of Low Intensity Chemotherapy and Supportive Care in Elderly Patients with Poor-Risk Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) and Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

NBCA has created The North Bay Cancer Alliance – Virginia M. Hoffman Memorial Fund with Community Foundation Sonoma County. This fund will hold the majority of the proceeds of the bequest and will provide grants towards the research project as funding is needed.
